Run Red moves with the velocity of someone finally separating herself from expectations that were never hers. You Must Love Me begins with certainty and discovers that certainty can be a very thin shield. And when we finally reach Forward, Lisa gets the last word. Some of our favorite Lisa vocals are the moments where she doesn’t overpower the song at all. She lets one sentence hang there and trusts it to do the damage. INSIDE SOVEREIGN There is very little on SOVEREIGN that Sophia McCarthy hasn’t touched. Every lyric. Every arrangement. Every song structure. Every ridiculous little sound that somebody became obsessed with at 2:00 in the morning. At some point, it passed through Sophia’s hands. 🤘 That’s always been part of her role in Velvet Rebellion, but SOVEREIGN pushed it further. This album changed shape constantly while we were making it. Songs got heavier. Parts disappeared. Others were rebuilt from the floor up. A melody written for one instrument found its way onto another. Sometimes the thing we loved most was exactly the thing Sophia decided needed to go. She plays piano and keyboards throughout the record, but calling Sophia “our keyboardist” has never really explained what she does. She’s an architect. Lisa might arrive with a page of words. Natasha might hear where a song needs more weight. Racheal might find the chord that changes the emotional center of a section. Zoe might turn an idea into a guitar line nobody wants to touch afterward. Emily might decide the whole thing needs to hit considerably harder. Sophia is usually somewhere in the middle of all of it, connecting the pieces. That’s probably the closest explanation we have for how SOVEREIGN was made: six people bringing different instincts into the room. One record slowly emerging from the collision. INSIDE SOVEREIGN You’ve heard @natasha_parks_vr throughout every Velvet Rebellion record. You haven’t heard her quite like this! 🔥 Our next album, SOVEREIGN, opens with DOMINION, with Natasha stepping into the lead vocals and setting the tone for everything that follows. Her voice sits lower, heavier and darker than what we’ve explored with her before, and when the song breaks open, so does she. Some of the screams she recorded for this album are among the most ferocious vocals we’ve ever put on a Velvet Rebellion track! But DOMINION is only the beginning! Natasha also takes the lead on CALM, a slow-burning contradiction of a song that turns restraint into something enormous, and later on No Return, where the album begins its final three-song journey through choice, consequence and moving forward. Her fingerprints are all over SOVEREIGN beyond the microphone. She helped shape the songwriting on several tracks, and we built much more of this record around the weight and movement of her bass. There are moments where it isn’t tucked underneath the guitars at all. It’s part of the architecture. For years, Natasha has been one of the forces holding Velvet Rebellion together. If our previous album, Experience, was about what happened to us, then Sovereign is about what happens because of us. Not chaos or anger, but COMMAND. Each song on this album has months of production work behind it. Some of the ideas behind the lyrics stretch back over a decade, emotions finally given form. Extensive work has gone into each song, with guitars, drums and synth all being individually recorded and then professionally mixed and mastered to perfection.
